Over the weekend the music world became more and more aware of the death of Beastie Boys’ Adam Yauch and they began paying tribute to the rapper who went by the name of ‘MCA’.
Two of those musicians that paid tribute were Madonna and Coldplay. In 1985 Madonna actually brought along the Beastie Boys on her The Virgin Tour, as a supporting act. This was a year before their debut album was released and Madonna gave them a taste of what lives as touring musicians and superstardom would be like. Madonna expressed her thoughts on Facebook, saying:
“The Beastie Boys were one of a kind! And so was Adam! They were all an important part of my musical history and integral to the musical revolution that was happening at the time. I’m very sad to hear about Adam’s passing. God bless him and his family.”
She also posted the above photo of her with the boys running from them as they spray her with squirt guns.
Coldplay took more of a musical route to pay tribute to Yauch. They took the band’s hit song “(You Gotta) Fight For Your Right (To Party)” and turned it into a slow, almost mournful sounding ballad. They switched up some of the lyrics in there to say:
“I said mom you’re just jealous, it’s the Beastie Boys/ So we’re sending all our love to the Beastie Boys“
