Ever since season one of the hit Showtime series Weeds the theme song has been the 1962 Malvina Reynolds tune “Little Boxes.” With the show beginning it’s eighth and final season two Sundays ago, the title track will be sung by a variety of different artists.
This was also done in the second and third seasons of the series, first done by Elvis Costello. Death Cab for Cutie, Regina Spektor, Randy Newman, The Shins, and The Decembrists all followed in his footsteps throughout seasons two and three.
Now in season eight there are a whole new group of musicians taking on this task. Ben Folds sings the song in the second episode of the season, followed by a duo of Steve Martin and cast member Kevin Nealon. Also lending their voice to the final season of the show will be Mariachi El Bronx, Mountain Goats, Bomb the Music Industry!, and Womenfolk. Japanese folk singer Tomoya Takaishi, Dierks Bentley, and cast member Hunter Parrish will begin episodes eight through ten. Singers for the final three episodes are still in negotiations.
As the seasons went on these past seven years “Little Boxes” has also been sung in French, Russian, and Spanish.
Who do you think they should get to sing “Little Boxes” for the final three episodes of Weeds???
